Classes in Drama, Dance & Music
The discipline of drama at a junior level focuses on encouraging the imagination and performing in front of others in small groups. This means focusing on building confidence and self-esteem in the young people. Social skills and teamwork are enhanced by the integration and interaction in group exercises. Improvisation, group mime, acting out a scene together, story circles are a great way to work on team-building skills. Poetry and prose are used as tools to enhance speech and language skills, and action poetry is used to develop movement, posture, and stance. Gearing towards end of term/year performances, we work on scenes and how to put all these skills we have learned into practice.
Dance at Junior Stage School level elaborates on skills started in kinder classes. Don’t worry if your child did not attend Kinder, classes are differentiated to suit the different abilities within the class. Technique, posture, balance, stability, and co-ordination exercises are all focused on. Dance routines and technique sequences enable young people to put all their skills together to pieces of music that they know and love. Children will experience many dance genres in class. Working towards a product; children are asked to develop moves/dances based on stories and themes. Characterization and using facial expressions in performance is also developed.
Each week in Junior Stage School, participants develop vocal, aural, and performing skills through song. We explore how rhythm and melody works in our fun vocal warmups. The group and individuals sing songs from popular musicals and begin to learn the basics of music theory. This culminates in a popular student performance at the end of the year.
